There’s a lot of rumbling today about one of the players involved in the multi-team Halladay/Lee deal failing a physical and that holding things up, and speculation has centered on A’s prospect Brett Wallace and Phillies prospect Michael Taylor, but I’m told that is not the case.

Buck said his agent heard some rumblings during the winter meetings that some other teams might have interest in him but A’s GM Billy Beane didn’t express interest in parting with him.

He thinks his speed is best utilized if he’s up near the top of the order, which could give the A’s a pretty interesting duo of basestealers, with Rajai Davis and Crisp.

Oakland liked the way the young starters progressed last year, but having an established veteran will help, and Duchscherer, with his pinpoint control, is an excellent model to show that pitchers who hit corners and change speeds well can enjoy great success in the league.

Billy Martin “was the most fearless manager in baseball history.” His aggressive basestealing tactics were “insane” according to the math,San Diego Chargers jerseys, but he dramatically improved most teams he managed, including the 1980-81 A’s, for a season or two before they flamed out. He says the leader most comparable to Martin is not a baseball manager but conquistador Hernan Cortes, who burned his boats prior to taking Mexico. The act was not the important part. I’m hearing that Coco Crisp was having a tough time getting from his home near Palm Springs to Phoenix for his physical because of a flight delay, so any announcement is on hold for the time being.

When I said that sounded a little like the young Jermaine Dye, Taylor said he hears that comparison a lot, and if he can have a career anything like Dye’s, he’d be thrilled.

Justin Duchscherer just conducted a very candid conference call with local reporters in which he discussed his diagnosis of clinical depression last summer; I’ll be able to delve into it more in tomorrow’s paper, but to summarize some of his comments:

To that end, Buck has been working with ex-A’s outfielder Nick Swisher and Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long. Buck has all but eliminated his famous “waggle” and he said that for the first time, he’s really incorporating his lower body into his swing. As yesterday’s Coco Crisp signing showed, the A’s like to have a lot of depth, given their many injuries the past few years, and having extra starting pitchers is a plus, especially considering that some in that mix can work out of the bullpen, including potentially Gonzalez and Outman.

Since the team already has three starting outfielders, it seems like this free-agent signing would set up a trade of one of them — Scott Hairston, perhaps — for a third baseman or shortstop. Under that scenario, Crisp would start in left until Michael Taylor is ready to turn opposing pitching staffs into Shredded Wheat. Or maybe Rajai Davis would be the one who goes,New York Giants jerseys, and Crisp would start in center. At any event, this signing would only work if Billy Beane has some Trix up his sleeve.

I spoke to onetime A’s right fielder Travis Buck yesterday about the most recent influx of outfielders, which presumably pushes him down the depth chart again, but Buck has a good attitude about the whole thing: He said that if he goes out and does what he’s supposed to during the spring, either the A’s will want him or someone else might.

I asked Taylor if he can compare himself to any particular player and he responded that he’s a little unique because he’s so big (6 foot 6, 250 pounds) but he’s not strictly a power hitter; he can run,Super Bowl jerseys, too, and take the extra base, move runners over - the little stuff along with hitting the occasional homer.

It’s great to hear Duchscherer sounding upbeat and ready for a fresh start. He has clearly gained a lot of knowledge about coping with stress and emotional issues, and he said he is very happy to be returning to a spot where he feels comfortable. He loves working with catcher Kurt Suzuki and with pitching coach Curt Young, and he appreciates the A’s support and sensitivity during his tough times last summer.

*He is looking forward to mentoring the young A’s starters, both as a pitcher - he said he can show them that you can still get out big-league hitters even if you have “sub-par stuff” - and as a person. He said he didn’t feel he knew anyone going through the sorts of things he was as a young player, but after this experience of the past year, he can be a sounding board for teammates with off-the-field issues, too.

There were those rumblings today about someone in the multi-team trade failing a physical, which was discounted by my sources, and Taylor said he’d heard that report but then he got the call from the A’s soon afterward so he knew it was bogus.

*Duchscherer first realized he needed help when he was unable to board a flight from Phoenix to Triple-A Sacramento for a rehab start. He said he was “paralyzed” when he got to the airport, and he couldn’t figure out why he felt that way.

The base salary is $2 million, but Duchscherer could earn as much as $5.5 million with incentives,Oakland Raiders jerseys, should he reach benchmarks of 30 starts and 200 innings.

MLBTR is reporting the A’s are on the verge of a one-year, $5 million deal with Coco Crisp, a fine defensive outfielder who isn’t exactly Cap’n Crunch with the bat (stats).

Duchscherer is a steal at $2 million guaranteed, and even if he maxes out with incentives, at $5.5 million, he’s a bargain.

Taylor has Type 1 diabetes, and he said he has a program that works for him, but he does have to be careful about what he eats, he tests his blood sugar and he administers insulin. There have been numerous top-tier athletes with Type 1 diabetes, and the A’s are not concerned about it, but they will be absolutely cognizant of the condition.

There’s no problem with the physical itself, just getting the free-agent outfielder to it. Crisp, 30,Cleveland Browns jerseys, has had surgery on both shoulders this year but he is expected to be be completely ready for spring training. He has a pending one-year deal that is believed to be worth around $4.5 million (with an option for 2011) but he will have to pass that physical first.

It’s all done, Coco Crisp is a member of the A’s; no details announced on figures, but it’s somewhere between $4-5 million with an option for 2011.

Taylor won’t have to worry about that if the projections are correct; many talent evaluators, including scouts and media analysts,Detroit Lions jerseys, say that he had the best overall season of any position player in the minors last year.

Aroldis Chapman might not be a bargain if he lands a deal approaching $20 million, but the A’s have more money to work with than many believe and it’s fun to see a lower-payroll team contend with the big dogs for a potential star.

“I figured if they were setting up this (conference call), it couldn’t be that serious,New York Jets jerseys,” he said. “A trade with this many moving parts, I figured there would be some mistruths that would come out, but I’d never heard anything from a credible source with inside information.”

I do know the A’s love Crisp’s defense, and even if speed hasn’t been a “Moneyball” kind of thing for Oakland in the past, their shift to defense a few years ago was an effort to take advantage of some market disparities. And with so many young starters and relievers, Oakland believes a strong up-the-middle defense is extra important.

So again, from what I am hearing, there are no problematic physicals. In fact, it’s more likely that announcements will come this afternoon making this monster deal official. Wallace would be going from Oakland to Toronto and Taylor coming to the A’s from the Phillies.

Lefty reliever Jay Marshall was designated for assignment in order to make room for Duchscherer on the 40-man roster. Marshall seems to wind up back in Oakland like clockwork, so even if he gets picked up by another team, he’ll be in an A’s uniform again someday, I’d bet.

I think it could be pretty fun to watch, especially after so many years of slow, station-to-station teams. But I also think the A’s will add some power before the season starts, and I think that there’s a good chance it will be Jack Cust again. As I reported in this morning’s Chronicle,Dallas Cowboys jerseys, the A’s were optimistic about re-signing Justin Duchscherer,New Orleans Saints jerseys, and though the team might not announce the agreement until after Christmas, word from multiple sources is that a one-year deal is done pending a physical.

No matter what happens on the field, this is already a nice story, and a reminder that baseball players are people first, athletes second. They have the same problems everyone else does, but they sometimes have to play them out in public, which can’t be easy. Here’s to a fine season for Justin Duchscherer.

This is an era when many businesses are going green, and my theory is that with huge guys Chris Carter and Taylor,Washington Redskins jerseys, Billy Beane has decided to see if he can recreate the Bash Brothers with no chemical enhancements.

The likely hold-up: the teams are awaiting approval on some of the cash elements of the deal.

Crisp definitely fits that mold, but does shortstop Cliff Pennington? Is that an area the A’s need to upgrade defensively or was he adequate there last year as a rookie?

When I asked if he believes he’s major-league ready, Taylor said that most players would like to think that, but he’ll have to prove it when given the opportunity. From what I’m hearing,Jacksonville Jaguars jerseys, he will get every opportunity during the spring, so I’m sure he will be one of the most central stories in Phoenix in two months.

Both the Golden LEAF Loan Program and the Rural Center Loan Program will be administered by Self-Help and will be able to provide roughly $27.5 million in loans to North Carolina business owners.

November 18th marked the first regional meeting of the Joining Our Businesses and Schools (JOBS) Commission. The meeting was held at the Senator Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center in Williamston and was attended by more than 150 people. The next regional meeting of the JOBS commission will in the Eastern Region on January 28th at Nash County Community College campus in Rocky Mount.

As a member of the State Board of Education and a longtime advocate for public schools, this was an exciting visit for me. It showed me what is possible when we look for innovative ways to reach students. It also showed me that these pilot schools are doing a great job of preparing students to compete in the global economy,Baltimore Ravens jerseys, by arming them with skills that will translate into jobs.

All branches of the St. Martin Parish Library will be closed on Saturday, September 13th due to Hurricane Ike.? All branches will reopen on Monday,New England Patriots jerseys, September 15th with normal library hours.

We are open to the public.? Some of the branches have phone and computer issues.? The Main Library has abbreviated hours;? closing at 8pm instead of 10 pm.? The Main Library has sections cordoned off due to water damage but staff can retrieve particular titles from these areas;? no patron browsing.

We feel like we are reliving Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita here in Terrebonne.? We sustained minimal damage during Hurricane Gustav, but we are having severe flooding in the rural bayou communities of Terrebonne for Hurricane Ike.? I do not have any information on 4 bayou branches because the levees were breached or broke in these communities.? Some of the structures have over 5 feet of water.? I know of two staff members who have over?2 feet of water in their homes and have more employees in the bayou communites that I have not heard from yet.?

The Lowry Branch had some wind damage.

Beauregard Parish Library is fine … although it is getting hard to keep track of which roof leaks are new and which are still dripping after being fixed from earlier hurricanes. The library system has limited Internet access with only the main library having?service.

December 19,Tennessee Titans jerseys, 2009 Winter Storm: Be Prepared A winter storm is expected to start this evening and last well into tomorrow morning with heavy accumulation amounts, particularly in the Southeast portion of Massachusetts. MassDOT encourages residents and drivers to avoid driving during the evening and early morning hours if possible so that MassDOT and local plowing crews have space to safely clear the road. Use the MBTA or regional transit options if possible.

We have already begun preparations and at the height of the storm, MassDOT crews will have mobilized thousands of pieces of snow clearing equipment throughout the state.

If driving, remember that the road in front of the plow is usually in much worse condition than the roadway behind the plow. Plows will typically travel under 35 miles per hour and there is always a temptation to pass them. For safety purposes, it is recommended to stay a safe distance behind snowplows.

December 22,nfl jerseys, 2009 Fed Stimulus to Complete Quincy Concourse Governor Deval Patrick joined state and local officials in Quincy to announce the key final component of the long-awaited Quincy Center Concourse Downtown redevelopment project is moving forward with $8.1 million in federal stimulus American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds.

The Quincy Center Concourse will make improvements on Revere Road, an east-west connector road that will tie together the Quincy downtown area, long separated by a north-south rail corridor, spurring further redevelopment of downtown Quincy by separating local traffic from thru traffic.

The $8.1 million ARRA project is Phase II of the larger three-phase Quincy Concourse project and includes 1,900 feet of roadway reconstruction and realignment, along with demolition of an existing building owned by the City. It will connect on the west side with the Phase I Paul Harold Bridge that provides motorist and pedestrian access over the rail corridor. On the east side of the corridor,Detroit Lions jerseys, this Phase II project will connect with the final Phase of the overall project now under construction by the city. The completed connection will improve access and is expected to attract business investment on both sides of the rail corridor. The project is expected to be advertised in January 2010 with construction beginning in the spring.

Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray and MassDOT Secretary & CEO Jeff Mullan joined state and local officials in Worcester at St. Matthew’s Church today for the ribbon-cutting to celebrate completion of the $346 million reconstruction of Route 146 from I-290 in Worcester to Route 122A in Worcester and Millbury.

The reconstruction of four miles of Route 146 covered 13 years of construction and 10 major construction contracts awarded by the former MassHighway totaling approximately $300 million, along with the $46.5 million former Massachusetts Turnpike Authority project to build the new I-90 interchange Exit 10A.&#0160,NHL Jerseys; Even given the magnitude of the project,2009 Pro Bowl jerseys, it was completed on time and within the original budget.

The project relocated,Dallas Cowboys jerseys, widened and divided more than four miles of Route 146 from I-290 in Worcester to Route 122A in Millbury. The MBTA holiday service schedule for December 24-25 includes the following changes to assist travelers:

Thursday, December 24

Grant Targets Braintree/Weymouth Project The Patrick-Murray Administration has awarded a $2.4 million Public Works Economic Development (PWED) grant for streetscape and infrastructure improvements for the Braintree/Weymouth Landing Project.

The PWED grant will leverage $2.2 million in additional private investment, transforming an important business area with new street paving, sidewalks, lighting, overhead utility removal and landscaping, while creating an estimated 75 permanent jobs.

Commonwealth Conversations: Transportation December 28, 2009 Lowell I-495 Accelerated Bridge Project Progress

Under the historic reforms signed into law earlier this year by Governor Patrick, the vast majority state's highways, roads and bridges are all controlled by one, unified MassDOT Highway Division for the first time ever,New York Giants jerseys, allowing for more efficiency and coordination.

Evening Service: Additional trains will operate and provide rush–hour service levels throughout the evening. A problem that Google mentioned was that they had to run plugins at high privileges, but with changes made to the plugins it would be possible to run them at lower privileges.

Now that we’re basically done with Firefox 3.5 we’ve formed a project team. We’re calling the project “Electrolysis”. Because we can’t do everything at once,Youth NFL jerseys, we are currently focusing on performance and stability; using a security sandbox will be implemented after the initial release. Details of the plan are available on the Mozilla wiki, but the outline is simple:

Sprint as fast as possible to get basic code working, running simple testcase plugins and content tabs in a separate process.
Fix the brokenness introduced in step one: shared networking, document navigation and link targeting, context menus and other UI functions, focus, drag and drop, and probably many other aspects of the code will need modifications. Many of these tasks can be performed in parallel by multiple people.
Profile for performance, and fix extension compatibility to the extent possible.

Identifying troublesome sites is much easier using OS tools rather than tracking usage per-site in a single process… to do it in a single process you’d need a VM architecture which is very different from our current C++ codebase.

I feel like the overhead of an entire process (startup time and memory usage) would suggest that this model would actually have the opposite effect on the performance. This is probably more true on Windows than other platforms. I’m imagining an average computer user that is viewing the task manager trying to understand why their machine is running so slowly and seeing a bunch of Firefox processes running. I suppose it would be neat if there was an easy way to identity which process was driving a particular page so a user could find pages causing trouble,Cleveland Browns jerseys, but this probably wouldn’t be easy to determine from task manager. It also seems like this problem (identifying troublesome pages) could be tackled in the current architecture.

“west nile virus”: although you could achieve similar performance using threads and processes, using processes involves fewer changes to our code (because of global variables) and is necessary for the stability aspect (to protect the entire browser against crashes of one piece).

Increased stability: if a plugin or webpage tries to use all the processor, memory, or even crashes, a process can isolate that bad behavior from the rest of the browser.
Performance: By splitting work up among multiple processes, the browser can make use of multiple processor cores available on modern desktop computers and the next generation of mobile processors. The user interface can also be more responsive because it doesn’t need to block on long-running web page activities.
Security: If the operating system can run a process with lower privileges,San Francisco 49ers jerseys, the browser can isolate web pages from the rest of the computer, making it harder for attackers to infect a computer.

Jason: startup time is only a problem if you do lots of stuff at startup. On Windows and mobile devices in particular I/O is very expensive, so we’ll need to make sure that the content rendering process doesn’t need to do much I/O. Sharing DLL memory and avoiding network and NSS initialization in the child process should avoid most of the startup issues.

jasmith: 1) let’s measure instead of making assumptions. I think we can do a lot better than Chrome 2) VM domains can’t help protect against crashes 3) Did you read the planning wiki or are you simply talking snarky for the fun of it?

For a long while now (even before Google Chrome was announced), Mozilla has been examining ways to make Firefox better by splitting the work of displaying web pages up among multiple processes. There are several possible benefits of using multiple processes:

Any comments on this? It sounds like something that would get a lot more traction if Mozilla (and other browser makers) joined Google in asking for.

We’re currently in the middle of stage one: Ben Turner and Chris Jones have borrowed the IPC message-passing and setup code from Chromium. We even have some very simple plugins loading across the process boundary! Most of the team is in Mountain View this week and we’re sprinting to see if we can implement a very basic tab in a separate process today and tomorrow.

Having the GUI in a separate process will make Firefox feel and act much more snappy. Dual core is normal, quad core is high end and 8+ threads will become the high end within 2 years. I hope that Firefox will be able to use all threads that are available and 3dcards of course.
But apart from having the GUI freeze until it is ready I haven’t had any complaints about stability of Firefox. Even the nightlies are more stable than any Chrome version I have used. I am looking forward to the snappy of Chrome.

Exciting stuff! Why the name Electrolysis?

2. Can’t you implement a construct similar to AppDomain in MS .Net that provide isolation without the overhead and cumbersome binary communication of multi-process computing. You could use code from the Mono project.

Our datacenter (while normally providing us with excellent service) is experiencing a problem with one of their routers handling traffic in New York City. This is making any websites hosted in this datacenter very slow to load for users accessing them through that particular router. The network admins at the DC are working on the problem and hope to have it fixed very shortly.

So a couple weeks ago we got a message from our website from someone named Leonardo Machado. He said something like “I’m 15 years old, from Venezuela and I have this mix and was hoping maybe you can podcast it”. We love our fans and the first 2 tracks were Wicked Game Edit and 3 Wheel E-Motion, so we said what the heck let’s give it a listen. Guess what, it was awesome. Sure has been awhile since we posted anything about Soul Clap releases, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy putting music out on both our label homes (Airdrop and Wolf + Lamb). Since we last posted about our MJ Edits EP on W+L in August, we’ve had our first all original artist EP “The Definition” released on Airdrop 12″ vinyl + digital. Then in October our second Wolf + Lamb Black 12″ vinyl release,Dallas Cowboys jerseys, the “Pop Edits” was sent out into the word. Next, mid-November our remixes of No Regular Play’s “Smiling Faces” & “Derecha” hit Beatport, with both breaking the deep house top 100 and Smiling peaking at #22. Finally, this week,NBA Jerseys, our collaboration with Le Loup, “I Want You&#8221,Washington Redskins jerseys; was featured as a digital bonus on W+L’s Significant Others Too EP. For those of you paying attention, Baker Man Edit comes out on AUX 12″ vinyl this month and we’ve got loads more instore for 2010, so stay tuned!

Somewhere along our last European tour we were in Berlin and our good friend Voitek (spelled Wojchiech, believe it our not) from 3 Channels aka Catz &#8216,Baltimore Ravens jerseys;n Dogz told us it was time to go to dinner. So to dinner we went, and when we got there we met Jay Shepheard. Jay is from the UK, but recently made the pilgrimage to Berlin along with so many others in search of dance music’s holy grail (which we think is actually somewhere in NYC!).
